Xavier

The limo pulled up in front of a huge house. It was just as big as Rick’s manor in Texas but didn’t look as outlandish as Rick’s did. There were no huge hedges perfectly trimmed or a massive driveway leading from the street to the front entrance. Actually, there was no place for a driveway. The door was right on the street. The only thing keeping people from walking in was a small gate that only came up to my mid-thigh. Saskia got out and came to stand next to me.

“Are we going in?”

“Yeah, sure.”

The gate was opened by the limo driver, and he motioned for us to move forward. I took Saskia’s hand and led her up the few stairs to the front door. It was huge, taller than me, and painted bright red. Saskia reached out and knocked before I had the chance to do it myself. I looked down at her with what I hoped was fury in my eyes. She looked at me with a childish grin before the smile disappeared, and she continued to stare at me in confusion. I was about to ask her what was wrong when the door opened, and a man in a black suit appeared.

“Alekxavier, I presume,” he said in broken English.

“Yeah. This is Saskia, my friend.”

He nodded at her before opening the door wider to let us in. We stood in a large foyer with paintings hung around the circular room, and the floor was super shiny marble. This foyer would put Rick’s house to shame. A large spiral staircase leading up to another level, and a door to the left was closed. Another doorway was partially open right in front of us.

“Please, follow me,” the insanely tall man said reminding me a little of Lurch from The Addams Family. I held onto Saskia’s hand tighter and made sure she was still with me. My heart was all but beating out of my chest as we ascended the stairs. I could hear Saskia oohing and aahing behind me as we gained a greater look at the pattern in the marble tiles below. It was in the image of a painting with a woman who looked eerily familiar. Each tile placed strategically to show the painting. The higher we got, the clearer the image became.

Then we reached the top of the stairs, and I could see who the woman was.

My mother.

“Come with me,” Lurch said breaking me from the spell of the tiles. Saskia’s eyes were wide, too, but for a completely different reason. As I turned to follow Lurch, I saw the reason. The walls were painted a lush purple with bronze trim. The walls held paintings, some portraits, and a table sat outside a door with a bouquet of flowers in the middle of it reminding me of a hotel. Lurch came to a stop outside a door before knocking. Saskia and I were looking around until I found a portrait of someone I recognized.

Soleil.

She was in an outfit that I could only imagine was from the 1960s.
